A Winter Weekend on Lake Jefferson

In an attempt to cure our cabin fever, we went to the cabin two weekends ago. Not only does the cabin give us a chance to get away from the confinement of our home, it's a good chance for us to make sure everything is in proper order down there and all secure.

As you will remember, our good friends The Morsching's live on Lake Jefferson full time, so we made plans to have dinner with them and let the girls spend some time together. Mallory just loves their teen aged daughters, Bailey and Anika. They are both very special to her.

Upon our arrival, we checked the cabin throughout and found everything was in proper order, so we headed over to the Morsching's for dinner. They had a great idea to walk out to the island on the lake and go exploring. In the six years my parents have owned that cabin, we have never set foot on the island, not that we didn't want to. Christopher has always wanted to check it out, but for one reason or another, we just didn't. Here was our chance so away we went.

It was about a 15 minute walk to the island. It was cool being able to explore and learned very quickly we are not the first to make our mark. There was a campground already set up with a picnic table, chairs and a campfire ring which we are FOR SURE going to go back and use this summer.

We hiked to the top of the hills and found another small campground/campfire complete with a outdoor toilet. It was really just a toilet seat attached to a wooden box that was thankfully empty. Anika helped Mallory climb a tree and Bailey slid down the big hill with her onto the lake, TWICE!

Here is a video of Bailey and Mallory sledding down the hill...

Once down the hill, off the island and back onto the lake, we found a big ice heave. Mallory was just enamored with it. She thought the little cave like openings underneath would've been a great place to live. She crawled all over that thing.

The sun was starting to set so Steve suggested we start heading back. It was a beautiful day, but once that sun goes down, the lake wind can be very bitter and cold. We packed Mallory up into the sled and started back. What a beautiful end to our exploration!

We enjoyed a spaghetti and meatball dinner with The Morsching's (Mallory's request) along with a very delicious lettuce salad with homemade croutons and ranch dressing, made by Kim. Mmmmm, I am getting hungry as I write this! It was such an amazing night with our cabin friends! We cannot wait to see them on a weekly basis. Kim said it best when we left, summer is right around the corner!
