Taraxacum: a genus of chiefly weedy perennial composite herbs which includes the dandelions.
To adults dandelions are an annoying weed. Toxic to our summer environment. Undesirable and ugly. Think of how often you drive by a dandelion laden lawn and say to yourself..."man, they sure do have a WEED problem".
To a child dandelions are flowers. Bright and beautiful. Yellow like the sunshine. When a child sees a dandelion laden lawn, they think..."Wow! Look at all of those beautiful, yellow FLOWERS!" Children also want to pick and keep as many of those weeds flowers as they can possibly hold.
Well, my child is no different.
While Mallory has had no trouble finding a daily bouquet of dandelions to pick and keep for herself, or give to m to "put in a vase on the table mom", she had a little help from her friends...
Here is Daniel, the neighbors grandson, picking a dandelion and giving it to Mallory to add to her already sizable bouquet. What a charmer! All on his own, he grabbed a flower for his lady of the day.
As hard as it is to appreciate the dandelion, having a child sure helps. How can this weed be so bad and ugly? I think we could all learn a little by seeing this technical weed for what it's trying to be. Through the eyes of a child, it's a beautiful flower. Beautiful indeed.
